That Conversation You’ve Been Avoiding? It’s Costing You

Let me take you back to a conversation I avoided for way too long…

Years ago, I had a rockstar employee—charismatic, productive, loved by clients. But behind the scenes? He was a bulldozer. The team was afraid to challenge him. Morale was tanking. I knew I had to have the conversation, but I kept pushing it off.

Why?

Because I didn’t want to “rock the boat.” I chose to live in artificial harmony.

You already know how this ends—the damage was done when I finally spoke up.

That tough conversation I avoided?

It cost me two great team members and nearly my culture.

In my coaching work with founders and CEOs, I see this pattern again and again: Avoided conversations create invisible costs—until they blow up.

Here’s how to break the cycle and have the conversation before it’s too late:

1. Name it before it grows.

Start messy if you need to. Try:
"Can I bring up something that’s been on my heart? It may feel a little uncomfortable, but I think it’s important."

2. Create safety, not tension.

Say upfront:
*"I’m not here to blame—I’m here to connect, clarify, and move forward."
*Psychological safety is the secret weapon of high-performing teams.

3. Lead with curiosity, not control.

Instead of “Why did you do that?” ask:
*"Can you help me understand what led to that decision?"
*That small shift changes everything.

4. Hold the space.

Emotions may come up. That’s not a breakdown—it’s a breakthrough waiting to happen. When people feel seen, they show up differently.

5. Commit to the next right step.

Wrap with clarity:
"What’s one thing we can both do differently moving forward?"

**Real-Life Impact:
**Last month, a founder I coach finally had a heart-to-heart with his COO—after six months of tension and silence.

His words?

“That conversation saved our partnership. And probably the business.”
